Caring for your Bonsai

Sculpturing a tree into a beauiful bonsai is the ancient art of training and pruning a tree in a small container it is like holding a large tree in the palm of your hand.

Bonsai make a fabulous feature in the garden the only problem is many gardeners seem to struggle to keep them in prime condition. So here are some tips to help you uncover some of the mystery to growing beautiful Bonsai.

The first thing is moisture Bonsai plants are grown in such shallow containers they dry out easily. So it's important to make sure their roots are kept moist you may need to water your Bonsai every day especially in the warmer months.

You've got to give your Bonsai plenty of fresh air and good sunlight. When you have such a beautiful plant in a pot it is very tempting to display them indoors this is okay but only for short periods of time. The best place to keep your Bonsai is in a sheltered but sunny spot in the garden or on the decking where it gets some good morning sunshine.

Feeding your Bonsai tree is important too.Give your Bonsai some slow release fertiliser regularly in small amounts and use a liquid fertiliser as well throughout the growing season.

As your Bonsai grows, you'll need to trim it regularly to help maintain its great shape
. You may even want to experiment with training it further to take on new forms using copper wire.

Lastly if you want your Bonsai to keep looking good check the roots from time to time to see if they've filled their pot. You'll find you will need to trim the roots and repot them at least once very two years.

If you've had some trouble keeping Bonsai looking good in the past, don't give up. Keep these tips in mind and your Bonsai will thrive!
