Canna Perennials
Cannas are easily grown tender perennials, most popular kinds of canna tend to have gladiolus like flowers perched high above the large paddle like leaves, which resemble banana leaves and come in greens, blue-greens, variegations and stripes.The Canna flowers come in shades and combinations of yellow, orange, red and pink and are borne on tall stalks coming out of the foliage.
They can be grown in large containers or as a focal point in a flower bed, a single specimen can make a great feature in a circle bed or planted in a mass, they can look sub tropical.
Canna need to be started off in spring inside a greenhouse (minimum temperature 10ºC/50ºF) ideal temperture of 16ºC (61ºF), although plants will tolerate cooler conditions. When repotting, see if a rhizome has several eyes or new young shoots if so, slice it up so each piece has an eye and set of roots. Put each in a pot filled with multi-purpose compost and stand in the warmth.Water sparingly until shoot and root growth is well established then increasingly as the canna grows, they need copious drinks through summer especially in prolonged dry spells.
Avoid planting outside until all risk of frost has passed, the Canna prefers to be planted in a sunny position in rich fertile soil with plenty of organic matter mixed in.Once the winter frosts come cut back the foilage and lift the Canna's rhizomes cleaning off the soil.Store them in dry, soilless compost in large pots in a frost free place.They can be started into growth again in March.
