Clematis Perennials
Clematis is from the Greek word klema, meaning "climbing".Some Clematis are rampant climbers that can be trained up a tree or trellis against the side wall of a house.Other types are low growing perennials that can be used at the front of flower borders, while some clematis are even suitable for growing in hanging baskets or pots on the patio.
Clematis are part of the same family as as anemones, buttercups and peonies. They are naturally from the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, making them ideal for growing in the UK and cooler parts of the USA.
Clematis prefers their roots in the cool shade while the vines thrive on the sunshine, plant in moist well drained soil with plenty of organic matter mixed in.Soak your Clematis well before planting dig a hole so the crown of the plant is about 5cm to 7cm (2in to 3in) below the surface of the ground.Fill in around the plant with a mix of soil and general purpose compost or leaf mould and add a slow release fertiliser.
Water your Clematis thoroughly after planting and keep watering regularly especially during dry spells, a large watering can of water twice a week is better than small amounts every day!
