Why use a greenhouse?

The greenhouse was originally the place in which the "greens" (clipped evergreen shrubs) were housed over winter. It is a functional building and should normally be intergrated unobtrusively into the garden. When choosing your greenhouse you will find a variety of structural and glazing materials available as well as a wide range of designs.Your choice will be dictated firstly by your budget and then by the space you have available in your garden.

Probably the most obvious answer to the question “why use a greenhouse?” is that it opens up the opportunity for the gardener to grow a much wider range of plants and earlier in the year, but it is not of course unique in this respect. Cloches, cold frames, conservatories and old-fashioned sun-porches all share this, to a greater or lesser degree, though none of these offers quite the same amount of dedicated growing space as the true greenhouse.
