Rub it well into the grain with a lint free cloth.
As all owners of metal furniture will know rust can be a problem.Rub down metal items and treat with an anti rust paint before applyingyour top coat.
All garden furniture will last longer if stored in a shed or garage for the winter.The most important things to bring under cover are plastics because they can fade, canvas items such as deck chairs, parasols and hammocks should be brought inside too.
