Pear Tree Pruning and Training

Fruit tree shapesPears used to be grown as standard trees, which would eventually become rather large.Free-standing pear trees can still be seen in gardens, although many are getting rather aged.Nowadays if you want to grow as free-standing trees, bushes are the usual form or dwarf pyramids if you want something really small.

Support

Insert a strong stake into the ground in the planting hole before planting the pear tree.If you plant the pear tree first is only too easy to damage the pear trees roots, hidden by the soil by driving a stake through them.Secure the trunk of the pear tree to the post with a proprietary tree tie that is designed not to rub and damage the bark.

Train a Pear Tree Bush

Year One Winter In the first winter cut off the leader at the height you want the top of the trunk to be or leave for further years until it reaches it.Remove the lower laterals (branches) and cut back the remainder upto a half.

Year Two Winter In the second shorten the new branch leaders and side shoots to promote more branching.Remove any crossing or crowding branches especially toward the center which should be kept open.

Subsequent Years Winter Continue in the same fashion untill the tree fills out to its final shape.Once this has been achieved there is little pruning except to thin the spurs if they become congested.
