Rosa species

Rosa chinensis 'Mutabilis'There is significant disagreement over the number of true rose species. Some species are so similar that they could easily be considered variations of a single species, while other species show enough variation that they could easily be considered to be different species. Lists of rose species usually show between 100 and 150 with most botanists agreeing that the actual number is probably nearer the lower end of that range.

The History of Roses

Roses have a longer history than any other cultivated plant.Symbols of love and beauty for almost all cultures, primitive forms of our garden varieties existed approximately 30 million years ago.As early as 3000B.C., roses were an essential part of the emperor's garden in Peking.

Chinese rose Kushui is used for making rose powderChristian Knights in the Crusades brought these Chinese Roses (rosa chinensis) with them to Europe, marking the begining of rose breeding. The Greeks and Romans honored roses as the queen of flowers and plenty of roses were brought into the decadent palaces of Roman emperors.

A lapse in popularity followed, but roses were soon rediscovered as a medical plant by monks in monasteries. The next boom originated after pillaging Christian Knights discovered the beautifully smelling rosa x damascena and the apothecary rose rosa gallica (officinalis).

The selection of cultivated roses was augmented over the years by accidential discoveries of various types of wild roses.Local wild varieties, Chinese and Damask roses, formed the base for cultivation of many new varieties.Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon I, was very fond of roses and initiated the culivation of a great number of new varieties at the begining of the 19th Century.
